Take It Easy (Love Nothing)
“Now I do as I please, and I lie through my teeth
Someone might get hurt, but it won’t be me
I should probably feel cheap, but I just feel free
And a little bit empty”
-Conor Oberst
Bright Eyes, Digital Ash In A Digital Urn
I’ve always been amazed by Conor’s lyrics. Sometimes immature, sometimes hard to… follow, but he always knows how to communicate something that I’ve felt at some point in my life; and he always does it with grace and rythm.
For me, this part of the song represents someone tired of relationships, and everything involved with them, but who still has the urge of sex, and ends up using someone just to get rid of this need, perhaps tricking him or her (I don’t know what Conor’s sexual orientation is, and there are some rumors…) into believing a lie. Whether it’s about something going on between them that it’s really not there, or something less important, I don’t know. And while this whole fake relationship might end up with someone getting hurt, it won’t be Conor. However, at the end of the day loneliness is loneliness. There’s no escaping that no matter what you trick yourself into thinking, or the others.
What a great record “Digital Ash In A Digital Urn” is. This week I heard someone saying that they could spend hours analyzing every single line of a particular movie (more to come on this). Well, I feel the same way about Digital Ash. Oberst is a great writer, and sometimes I wish I could communicate what I feel as easy as it seems he does it. It’s a great talent that only few people have.
