I Trust You To Kill Me
“Sometimes you have to go through something to understand why you did it.”
-Kiefer Sutherland, a.k.a. Jack Bauer
I Trust You To Kill Me (movie)
I don’t quite get this quote, and neither does Mr. Sutherland, given that he continues the phrase by saying… “I don’t completely get it”. Yeah, that’s deep. But I like how it sounds. It sounds like maybe Kiefer knows shit. And maybe he does, I mean, just because he is a fucked up alcoholic and he has other self-destructive tendencies doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t learn from him (and we’re all about learning here in UQ). Maybe we should also learn from alcoholics. And from criminals, drug addicts, murderers, and a very long etc. You know, learn from their mistakes and their recoveries. Like John Frusciante. That dude is great (and he gained a lot of respect from his awesome album The Empyrean last year and for quitting the Red Hot Chili Peppers).
Now, on to the quote. What I get from it, is that sometimes, you just make decisions and do whatever you do because you believe it’s the right thing to do. Not because you want to do it, but because somebody or something is forcing you to do it, wether it’s your familiy (maybe you need the income), your friends (telling you how great of an opporutnity it is to do whatever you’re about to do or not do), or just society pushing you to do it because it’s common sense (like Kiefer says earlier in the movie about some of the roles he has played). That is a fucked up, because like Kiefer said, you end up performing poorly and usually you’re sad and stressed as shit because you know you don’t want to be there. But also, sometimes you don’t quite realize that you don’t want to make this thing until you make it. Maybe you thought it was the correct thing to do and you ended up doing it because you thought it would also make you happy.
Well, that’s not how it works people, like I said in the (500) Days of Summer post, do whatever the fuck you want to do. Nobody will give a shit.
