The Grammys
“It just seems like out of all the awards shows, none is more out of touch with the culture that it purports to celebrate and more deeply in the pocket of THE MAN than the Grammys.”
-Some writer over at Videogum.
It is not often that I quote what isn’t in a song or a movie, you know, scripted premeditated words. But I read this… a few weeks ago and I saved it thinking that I would post it later, at the time it felt important. I know it’s late and the Grammys were weeks ago but they’re so irrelevant that most people didn’t even noticed them, and I forgot to post this back then.
THis tipic is polemic. Because the winners and nominees are always band that sell tons, so they should deserve it, but that’s where the question comes in, are you giving awards to the ones who sell the most, or the ones that are better? Who is better is debatable, but the music that sells the most is usually shit. Why? Because it is created for the sakes of selling, by the people who have money and want you to like it and use tons of money just to get you to like it. It’s like, you hear something so many times you start thinking that you like it. That’s the radio effect.
But even then, that doesn’t excuse the fact that they are usually giving awards to old music (and saying it’s new), and that the awards for not-so-popular genres (anything that isn’t pop or rap) are given to shitty people that nobody really cares for. And, they are “prestige” awards. For some people. When you think about awards, like for movies, you think of the Oscars. When you think of TV awards, the Emmys. Videogames, E3. Music, the Grammys. But at least the other ones are half good. The Grammys are supposed to be “the best” music awards and they really are shit.
But then again, I’ve never really cared for them nor watched them, I’ve only heard about who they give awards to and who they nominate.
