Rules
Freedom is a possibility only if you’re able to say “no”.
-The Whitest Boy Alive, Rules
I usually say something about the artist quoted here, but I don’t really have much to say about these guys, I got this album a few days ago from a friend and I’m liking it. It’s good driving music. Driving is where I heard this quote, repeated ten thousand times. Really, the best place… to absorb music and really get into it is when driving, you’re focused and don’t have much to do other than watch the road and hear whatever is on, which, sadly for most people is the radio. There are really no good radio stations in my city. Even the news are greatly exagerated and right wing. It’s either that, latest pop stations, and mexican music stations. There is one station from the city’s college that sometimes has weird stuff, but they switch genres and topics like a whore changes corners (don’t know how often that is, but I’m guessing it’s usual). Like, they’ll have children stories and then the next hour they’ll have underground metal.
I’ve thought about having my own local radio station someday. I mean, I know I can do easily do a better job than the assholes that are usually on, but I doubt a lot of people here would want to listen to something that’s normally considered “unconventional”. You can’t move anything or try to do anything different here. This city, and even this whole country is very elitist. Like little kids, sometimes they’ll get interested in something but the next second they’ll get distracted and go do something else, something that they’re familiar with. I was actually just talking about this with a friend yesterday, we were thinking of what kinds of businesses would be here and we started to think back in how many businesses had closed recently and why. It’s always the same thing: new concept, lots of clients the first months and then before they turn a year old people is already back to what they used to know. And the business owners are guilty for part of it, they expect to do good without doing anything, not thinking, not anything different. You can’t expect to survive if you are the same as the others. The people that think different are usually the ones that succeed, everybody else just follows what they do.
That’s where the quote comes in, you can’t expect to “be who you are” or “do what you want” if you don’t say no, if you don’t go the way you want to go, do what you want to do. I don’t want to get into the whole “we’re not really free if society is telling us how to behave and what to do” hippie bullshit because I think it’s cheesy and overdone, all that I really want to say is, think for yourself.
